It's an abrupt step into the past which
is identifiably Swing Out Sister in execution but bears little
resemblance to their previous cool funk. Instead it draws heavily on
Burt Bacharach and John Barry - the Sixties soundtrack set. The
orchestration is impeccable throughout. - Bob Stanley, Melody Maker

Kaleidoscope World is positively out of
time. Imagine Bacharach-style orchestral sweeps allied with '60s
film themes and weird cocktail jazz and you'll understand where
they're coming from. Corinne's voice acts as an anchor. It is by
turns light and frothy, deep and chocolate-like, as if someone had
poured molasses down your lughole, occasionally hinting at granier
textures or gravel-like breathing exercises. Swing Out Sister are
down-to-earth in the best sense of the term. Almost the aural
equivalent of well-crafted pulp fiction in fact. A new kind of soul,
pregnant with emotion, but not too syrupy." (7/10) - Dele Fadele, New Musical Express

The soundtrack quietly and precisely
echoes soft mainstream jazz and swing. Brass and strings are its
primary colours. Guitars are picked at chest height. It's a warm,
crafted pop record, moodier than its predecessor - clean, subtle,
dreamy but just the right side of dippy. Amid the prevailing clatter
of remixes and the whine of production-line honey blond(e) poppets,
this tailored romantic revivalism has a rare grace and quality.
